People were first introduced to Asscher cut rings in 1902 when the design was invented by the Asscher brothers of Amsterdam in Holland. At first glance the stone might be mistaken for an emerald cut, due to its square shape and deeply cut corners. It is more closely defined as a hexagonal shaped stone with a series of stepped facets.

The facets create a series of parallel steps that have a reflective quality not unlike a hall of mirrors. This allows for the viewer to see the diamonds inner fire, unlike other baguette cut stones of similar clarity, color and cut. This particular cut draws the eye towards the centre of the stone and as such a high clarity is desirable when purchasing an engagement ring that sports this type of diamond cut.
