Wearing designer clothing was not done in our household whilst I was growing up, but then with five children, my parents probably did not have sufficient money to encourage us to think of wearing designer clothing. That has stayed with me and I do not think about wearing designer clothing even now that I can afford them.

However, these days, most children appear to be conscious of designer clothing. This probably illustrates the power of promoting and the fact that contemporary advertisers are more callous in targeting children than there predecessors in the Fifties and Sixties were.

The difficulty with children wanting to wear designer clothing though is that they do not understand why they should wear a particular garment, they merely see the adverts and the fact that their idols and friends are wearing them.

There is a good argument for wearing designer clothing but imitation is not one of them. Neither is having been persuaded to by advertisers and friends. The only decent reason for preferring designer clothing is because you like a designer’s style and theme. Most designers have a particular style although this can change from year to year.

A great deal of designers splatter their names all over their clothes, which ruins them for me. However, all clothing designers like to have their name or logo in a prominent position. They do this for two reasons: firstly to promote because otherwise their clothing is not distinctive enough ( a Lacrosse sweater without the crocodile is unrecognizable); and secondly, so that the wearer can show off the fact that they are wearing designer clothing.

Frequently clothing designers will branch out into other regions of designer wear. For example, Gucci sanction shoes, sunglasses and wrist watches. Gucci is hoping that if you love their shoes you will also try their sunglasses and wrist watches as well. In fact, this tactic works well. Wearers of designer clothing develop a relationship with the designers that they like and are more probable to have confidence in that brand.

The problem for most people is the cost. Designer clothing is a lot more costly than ordinary clothing and that is how it is meant to be, because part of the rationale for wearing designer clothing is snob value – to set yourself apart from the herd. This allows clothing designers to earn vast profits which opens up another difficulty – counterfeiting.

Where there is a chance of big profits you will find counterfeits, fakes or copies.If you are inexpert at recognizing designer clothing, you could easily get sucked into spending a lot of money on counterfeit items. Often it is not the clothing itself that is copied, although that is done as well, but the accessories are imitated a lot.

I have no figures, but I would not be astonished if there are ten times as many phony Gucci sunglasses in the world as real ones. So be careful, particularly if you do not have sight of what you are purchasing, as in the case of the Internet and be wary of market stalls and back street bulk traders.

I do not know about you, but the majority of people find Christmas shopping very stressful. Traipsing from shop to shop looking for presents for your list of loved ones. The jostling in the cold or the snow, but it does all seem worth it when you find something that you know will be appreciated by the recipient. One of the most popular types of presents is clothing.

However, purchasing clothing is not easy either, unless you know the person concerned very well indeed. Some people are very particular about the colours and even the labels they wear. Some might be insulted if you get the wrong size, especially if you buy something a few sizes too big. The material can also cause a problem if the recipient is allergic to it.

In spite of these problems, presents of clothing are still popular, so I will give a few suggestions on buying clothing for others for novices, who will probably be mostly single young men.

Size is a predicament for some articles of clothing like slacks, skirts, and blazers, whereas it is best to get it wrong in favour of the larger sizes if you are buying a sweater or a jumper as baggy jumpers and sweaters look good too and are even stylish. Men’s shirts on the other hand should be the correct size, while women’s blouses can be a size too big depending on the style of the blouse.

Neither shirts nor blouses may be too small, because they are uncomfortable and make it look as if the wearer has put on weight. Underwear has to fit properly too.

Therefore, when choosing clothing for someone whose size you are unsure of, pick one of the articles above for which the correct size is not too important. Otherwise you will have to ask the size from someone who might know. Large people often like to wear baggy clothing.

Colour is another obstacle, but the safest bet, if you do not know the recipient’s preferences is to get a colour that you have seen that person wearing most frequently. Otherwise, go for traditional colours such as a white shirt or blouse. Many largish people like to wear black too because it is said to make the wearer look thinner.

As for style, that is very difficult. One way you can get around this though is to point out a style, say on TV or in a magazine and say that you like it asking for the intended recipient’s point of view. If you are not in a position to do this because of distance or time, then you would be better off buying something traditional.

Traditional clothing does not go out of fashion as quickly as the latest craze. Or buy something that should be worn on holiday. I do not mean swim wear, but perhaps a smock or poncho that can be worn when one has had sufficient sun. Ponchos can be many sizes too big; height is more important than girth.

If you follow these guidelines you ought to be able to find some item of clothing for the people on you gift list.

While changing one’s image most people will focus on a new hair style and smarter clothes. Women may go for smart trouser suits or power dresses and men might decide to wear a lounge suit or a jacket and tie more often. If the weather is bad an expensive overcoat always completes the image, especially suede, cashmere or leather. It used to be that fur was de rigeur, but now it is duh.

However, there is another way of changing your image, a way that need not be that costly, although sometimes it takes courage to attempt it. That is the wearing or the using of accessories. Women have more scope here in numerous ways, but men have options as well.

Women can sport something in their new hair style; they can co-ordinate bags and shoes; they can wear a different kind of stockings or could begin wearing gloves, white kid, for example. They could modify the style of jewelery they wear and the colour or their hair and lipstick. Belts, brooches, watches and scarves can also serve the end of changing ones image. They could also wear a fresh flower on their lapel, in their hair or behind their ear for that old style gypsy look (that is the brave one).

Men have a slightly harder time of it without looking daft, but men can wear better shoes, wear a tie more often or a costly watch. They could carry a briefcase and an umbrella, and wear a flower in their button hole, but this is where it starts to look a bit contrived. They could also wear a monocle, a pocket watch or a bow tie.

My cousin wears a monocle and once you overcome your first instinct to laugh, you have to admit that he looks quite elegant. The same is the case with bow ties, which he wears as well and insists on tying it by hand. He also carries an umbrella, a briefcase and wears pinstripes. He is very brave and he is noticed and remembered wherever he goes.

However, you do not need to go that far. Even simply wearing a bow tie instead of a tie will set you apart. Have you noticed that if you are talking to someone wearing a bow tie you cannot help yourself staring at it? It is the men’s equivalent of a woman’s low-cut dress.

Anyway, accessories are a cheaper way of altering your image than going out and buying a new wardrobe of outfits and they are more easily combined that different suits. Go for colours that blend easily, like blacks, greys, browns and off-whites. Understatement is usually better than garish.
