A Concise Insight Into Gold Horns From Italy

By , January 22, 2012 5:28 pm

Italians use the word “corno” to indicate a horn and the word cornicello” is the close translation of little horn. Italians use the “corno” as an amulet meant to guard them from the trouble caused by others, that can harm them. The material utilized to make the “corno” is mostly silver or gold, but they also carve out the horns from red coral. This horn generally has a shape that looks like the twisted horns animals have.

Italian horns have gradually turned out to be stylish pieces of jewelry and created a fashion statement as the years pass. Furthermore, the horns indicate that the person wearing them is pleased with the Italian traditions and culture.

Before the advent of Christianity in Italy, the Moon goddess was considered really sacred. She had horns. Thus, horn shaped jewelry was worn to show respect for the moon goddess as well as to ward off any evil.

Italians replaced the goddess with Mary the virgin when Christianity spread inside the country. Mary’s image stood on the moon’s crescent and this influenced the horns to remain as sacred symbols. The idea that the horns contained sexual powers was typical in addition to the concept that individuals who wore horns had good luck. They wore the horns in conjunction with a cross in order to protect themselves adequately from many bad things.

Earlier, the horns were shaped out of red corals but gradually the crafty goldsmiths of Italy started producing them in silver and gold. Why? Because Italy is so in love with silver and gold jewelry.

For a nation which uses and processes around 500 tons of fine gold alone yearly, it is not at all astonishing. And also the fact that this love of gold jewelry making began about 3,000 years ago in Tuscany makes it even more understandable.

The standard of Italian gold is 18 carat, nevertheless greater and sometimes lower carats are also used. Carats are units to measure the gold content in any gold alloy as pure gold alone can’t be used simply because of its fragility. Usually nickel, silver or copper and sometimes other metals as well, are combined chemically with gold to form alloys.

Since the cost of gold continues rising every day, the highly skilled Italian goldsmiths now create gold jewelry made of lower carat and low weight gold. The charms and amulets they create usually have lower carat contents such as 14 karat to ensure that individuals can easily afford them and to make them much more durable.

The amount of money to spend on Italian gold horns is reasonable but the horns have different prices because of features including size, height and carat content. Nevertheless, they’re simple to discover and an Italian gold horn containing fourteen carats along with a height of 9-10 inches costs about 30 dollars. Therefore, why should you not purchase one?

Appropriate Clothing For Babies And Infants

By , October 4, 2011 4:46 pm

One of the chief requirements of babies and infants besides nutrition is the necessity to be at the right temperature. Babies and infants are very susceptible to being too hot or too cold and also to strong sunlight. From this one may deduce that suitable clothing for babies and infants is of paramount importance.

It is frequently thought that babies and infants generate too much heat and so that they can also cope with cold temperatures naturally, but this is unfortunately not true. A complication is that the effects of too much heat or cold can be delayed so that the real cause of a baby’s distress is mis-diagnosed. Sometimes, this can have fatal consequences.

People are apt to think that babies produce too much heat, but this is a falsehood. The fact is that warm-blooded animals like we mammals are able to generate more heat as we get older and therefore a baby is at the coolest stage of its transition into adulthood. A baby can be a degree or two cooler than an adult at its core.

Despite this fact, some cultures have insisted, and some still do insist, on toughening up a young infant. Ways of doing this have been to plunge the baby into cold water or to expose it to cold winds with insufficient clothing. This toughening up serves no useful purpose and can be very injurious to the child. It is possible that some peoples in some times used this method to ‘weed out’ their children, although it was never officially explained as that.

Some good guidelines that parents can use when choosing clothing for their babies and infants are:

The type and quantity of clothing should be sufficient to maintain the baby’s core body temperature. A degree or two above that is all right too. The clothing will also have to be regulated to adjust for the time of the year and whether you are at home or out walking. Put extra clothing on to go out and take some of it off when you get back inside, exactly as you would do for yourself.

Avoid wrapping your baby up in layer after layer of tight warm clothing or blankets unless you have to endure extreme cold. You can upset a baby’s thermostat by keeping it too hot all the time. It is far better to aim for a constant, uniform temperature. A baby that is tightly wrapped in blankets will have its movement restricted and maybe even its circulation impaired. This is clearly not a good idea.

Close-fitting, restrictive, hot clothing will also catch perspiration, which could cause the skin to be held in close contact with damp material for hours on end. This could lead to skin irritation and tenderness. Just as you would change a nappy when it is wet for the same reason.

Therefore, it is better to dress the baby in fairly loose fitting clothes suitable for the ambient temperature and regulate the temperature using a cardigan or jumper or blanket, loosely draped over it. The fabric is not so important, but you will have to inspect for allergies both to the material and the detergent you wash it in.

If you keep the clothing simple you will be able to add or remove it quickly as you see fit. This is important because most babies find dressing upsetting. To this end, try not to use ties, fasteners and pins. Velcro is far easier. Change all clothing every day to keep germs at bay.

Choosing South Sea Pearls

By , October 4, 2011 4:29 pm

South Sea pearls have been highly valued for centuries. Initially available only to royalty, today they adorn clothing, as well as a wide variety of jewelry, including rings, broaches, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. The gems are often given as symbols of love. Before the tradition of diamond rings representing devotion, they were given to symbolize romantic commitment.

Gemstones are categorized by their shape, luster, size, color and surface quality. While there is not one standard global grading system, a smooth surface, deep luster, large size, satiny finish and rainbow iridescence are highly valued.

Gold, white, silver, cream, yellow and pink are among the warm colors of these tropical beauties. The colors are created by their host oysters. The thick lining inside the oysters is nacre, also known as mother of pearl. Nacre is admired for its brilliant iridescence. The beads are composed of layers of nacre.

The hearty Pinctada maxima mollusk is the only oyster to produce these gemstones. While black nacre seeds are often known as black South Sea gems, they are created by the Pinctada margaritifera oyster.

Jewels from the South Sea are primarily harvested from oysters that live in the ocean waters of Australia, Indonesia, Tahiti and the Philippines. These elusive oysters thrive in natural saltwater habitats as well as hatcheries. Only a small percentage of wild mollusks contain treasures.

Natural beads are harvested from wild habitats. They are generally more valuable than their cultured cousins, which are seeded and harvested from farms. Due to over-harvesting, most of the world’s current jewels are cultivated in farms.

In the western part of Australia, the white-lipped and gold-lipped Pinctada maxima clams are primarily harvested. The black-lipped Pinctada margaritifera mollusks are harvested from the tropical seawater of Tahiti. The clams are named for the hues of their interior edges.

The large size of these tropical jewels is due to the size of their hosting mollusks, the largest gem-producing clams in the world. The Pinctada maxima can grow up to 12 inches in diameter. They produce thick nacre beads to a diameter up to one-half of an inch.

The warm waters known as the South Sea extend from the north coastline of Australia to the south coast of China. They provide the perfect natural environment for the Pinctada maxima oysters. The warm, clean waters encourage fast oyster growth, thick layers of nacre and large sizes. It’s an ideal habitat for the production of very valuable jewels.

In farms, the Pinctada maxima can be implanted with tiny beads or grains of sand when they are two years old. These implantations function as the seeds for new gems. The mollusks are returned to their saltwater habitat for two to three years for bead production. They secrete layers of nacre to entomb the seed, and form the beads. The oysters can survive the removal of the jewels. During their life-cycles, they can be reseeded about four times.

While not edible, the massive Pinctada maxima oyster is highly valued for its unique gem-producing ability. The South Sea pearls they create are among the most beautiful and highly sought-after gems in the world.
