When you tell people that you wake up at the crack of dawn to creep through the cold morning in an effort to find one of the most elusive animals known to man do you get blank stares and incredulous questions? When you wear your camouflage in public and brag about your last hunt, I’m sure you can feel the disapproval of strangers. Even something as benign as wearing a hunting t-shirt can draw criticism.

Hunters are used to this and the scorn rolls off of us like water from a duck’s back. People are going to judge you if they know you are an active hunter, and that’s not okay. The judgment people pass on hunters these days is as disgusting as these people feel about what hunters do. What they don’t know, or care to learn, is that hunting is needed these days more than ever.

When we wear our hunting t-shirts, we are effectively bragging about something we cherish. How many sports fans wear team-logo t-shirts and are never looked at twice for it? If a hunter wears his woodsman gear or hunting t-shirt then people immediately think of them as “backward” or “country”. That stigma should not exist in this day and age.

People refuse to believe that what we do is necessary for the environment. Human hunters fill a niche that has been vacated by decreasing numbers in the predator populations. This just naturally happens when urban environments spread out into the rural country side. If deer were left to run wild and breed without restraint, the food sources for them would be stripped bare within just two years. A deer slain by a bullet is much better than one slain by hunger. What hunters do is part of a tradition of nature that spans hundreds of years.

Hunters are under political fire every year. Holding fast to our pride is the only way we can combat this. We must show the people who refuse to learn that what happens during hunting season is for the benefit of everyone, not just the hunter. Deer hunting can be quite daunting for the beginner, the taking of an animals life is not something to be taken lightly. If one is prepared thoroughly, is appraised with the right knowledge and has the correct equipment then it can be a very gratifying pastime.

The types of deer that are hunted is wide and varied. In North America, white tailed, mule, and blacktailed deer are sought depending on the location. In the United Kingdom, there are many other species including red, roe, fallow, muntjac and Sika deer. Hunting is done during seasons that are determined by locality and also by species. The beginner must be aware of the season dates for their region.

There are many different methods of hunting, one common one being stalking. This involves following the trail of the prey looking for signs of its presence. This obviously has to be conducted as quietly as possible. Another popular method is the stand technique. This technique usually utilizes a tree stand or a ground blind. A tree stand constructed in an appropriate area, more often than not at the edge of grain or bean fields, at a height of two to five metres. A ground blind consists of a small camouflaged tent or hide. Still activity involves walking stealthily combined with concealment, actively pursuing the animal.

If hunting is to be done with a group of hunters, some of them can be employed to flush out the prey in the direction of the other hunters waiting to make their shot. This is known as line driving and often uses tree stands and ground blinds. In areas which are wide and open such as hills and canyons spot and stalk hunting can be used. This involves spotting the animal first and then tracking and pursuing it until a kill can be made.

Where allowed baits can be used to attract the game towards the huntsmen, though local laws should be checked first. Baiting can be beneficial by positioning the deer ideally for a quick and clean kill. If local rules do not allow for baiting then scents and calls can be utilized to attract prey. As humans have a scent which deer can pick up the use of a scent can also be used to mask the hunters own smell. The novice must learn to sit in a position where his own scent is not detectable by his quarry.

Most deer tend to rest after feeding in the morning therefore getting up before dawn and ensuring the hunter is in their stand or blind before sunrise is good practice. They will begin moving again towards sunset so an afternoon to early evening session will also maximize the hunting time available.

Deer can be hunted using a number of different weapons, the most common being bows and rifles, though crossbows, shotguns, handguns are also permissible. The weapons and calibre allowed vary by region but for rifles a . 243 caliber is considered a minimum requirement. Whatever weapon is chosen ensure that it is properly cleaned and functioning correctly, a poorly maintained weapon can result in undue suffering for the animal as well as posing a risk of serious injury to the huntsman.

The benefits of practice cannot be underestimated, the hunter must attend the shooting range and practice his marksmanship as much as possible before attempting to go on an actual hunt. Different shooting angles and positions must be employed in hunting and these must be employed during shooting practice as well. Learning about wind, how to move stealthily, the quarry itself as well as the weapon to be used will all contribute to a successful deer hunting season.
