Many professionals can end up stuck in a rut when it comes to using templates for PowerPoint presentations. A lack of diversity can lead to a sense of staleness setting in, especially for practitioners like teachers, who must face the same audience repeatedly. Freshening things up can be a good idea.

The first step towards creating a new template to use in presentations is to choose View, before clicking on Master and Slide Master. It is then necessary to open the Slide Master, click Format and then click Slide Design, opening up the Slide Design task pane. This is where colours can be added by clicking on Edit Color Schemes.

Backgrounds can be created using the Format and Background buttons, with other effects able to be added through the Fill Effects tool, allowing users to add gradients or pictures. Graphics for every slide can be added at this point, whether logos or otherwise. Any AutoShapes which are added will need to be formatted.

Fonts can be altered by clicking on Format and then opting for Replace Fonts. The Format option is then used to fine tune the alignment of texts, features such as indents or bullet points, as well as other features. The Ruler, which should be visible, can be used to tweak these aspects of the design.

If it is not, then it can be brought into view by clicking View, and then Ruler. Text placeholders can be re-sized by selecting them and using the grips, which can be dragged into the desired size. Footers can be created by clicking on View, and then Headers and Footers.

Some users may also want to create a Title Master. This can be done by clicking on the Insert tab, then by clicking on New Title Master. The same formatting tools as detailed above can also be applied to the Title Master, and once it has been completed the slide master can exited by clicking on View, then Normal.

The new design can be saved as normal by clicking on Save As and choosing the appropriate options on the menu. To use the newly designed templates for PowerPoint in a presentation, it is necessary to click on Format again, this time clicking Slide Design afterwards. Browse the designs, before choosing one and putting it into use by clicking Apply.

On 17/9/2008 Canon introduced the Canon 5D MK2, this camera has successfully proved to be revolutionary for filmmakers everywhere across the planet – for the first time Canon introduced an HD full frame DSLR that is great for really impressive video image recording.

This element was put in by Canon because journalists have been inquiring about it for quite a while and also the convergence between stills photography and video within the same device was swiftly becoming viable.

Nobody was more shocked than Canon when Filmmaker Vincent Laforet was among the first filmmakers let loose on the completely new digital camera. Another hassle is picture ‘skew’, this is evident when panning left to right quickly – vertical lines bend and twist noticeably – this is a problem on all CMOS video sensors but notably poor on the Canon because it’s scan rate from the top to the bottom of the sensor is very sluggish and there is no internal compensation. A solution to this is to quite simply steer clear of any quick pans!

Another obstacle is definitely the ‘form factor’. A DSLR is a very awkward form to film with, there is no focused eyepiece so only two points of contact – both hands. In a perfect world three points of contact are necessary to get a stable image whilst shooting hand held video. In the past two years a large number of proprietary camera support devices have been devised by a vast array of companies but they all fundamentally do the same task – supply one more point of contact by means of a shoulder or chest support technique.

The rear LCD monitor is generally problematic to look at in bright sunlight and there are various 3rd party items to cope with this, from low-cost hoods to pricey lensed eyepieces and additional video display units working off the built-in small HDMI port. There are lots of worries with the HDMI supply, most notably, it is quite delicate and fragile. Additionally there is a delay when feeding the image from the dslr to a monitor after hitting record, this means patiently waiting eight or nine seconds before acquiring a monitor visual. This can be maddening in a documentary situation.

The camera records in 8 bit quicktime H264 and even though this generates dazzling pictures it’s not considered to be a pro recording data format due to the H264 compression setting. That being said, the camera has been used for a great number of TV dramas, documentaries and features. It’s visual image beauty seemingly outweighing it’s technical limits.

In spite of the stated problems, many film makers (including myself) put up with these grievances because Canon have turned out a seriously superb, creative, film-making device.
