How to Make Your Own Compost
Making compost can be great for your plants and is also great for the environment, making it can be so simple that any one can do it. Compost is simply a mixture of material that is decaying, such as lawn clipping and dry leaves, most commonly used to provide nutrients to soil, and learning how to compost is becoming aware how to get this natural decomposing started which is going to reduce this organic material to a point it will no longer decompose. Composting can be a quick way to help the soil and bring back the nutrients, moisture and air for the growth of the homeowners’ healthy vegetables and flowers.
It is easy to learn how to compost. Almost anything can be thrown into the compost bin but do not add dog, cat, or human waste. Greens and browns is the mixture that should be added to the bin. Browns are the carbon-rich ingredients like leaves, shredded papers, branches, twigs, and hay. Greens will be organic matter that contains nitrogen, like grass clippings, manure, vegetables, fruits, are a few such ingredients. Brown material will produce air circulation while green ingredients will make moisture which can be a good combination when mixed with the browns.
Learning how to compost means discovering and excluding what not to put in a compost pile including pet waste, bones, meat, treated wood product, dairy products, peanut butter and other similar items.
When making compost having air circulation is critical so having holes on the compost bin is ideal. A compost pile on the ground needs to be turned or stirred at least once a week to provide the air that microbes require to survive and to stop organisms from dominating the pile and making it smell. You should as well keep the pile moist by giving it enough water so it can be as wet as a wrung out sponge.
Composting will never completely restore today’s disturbed soil, but it will help balance and enrich the soil in your garden. So why not recycle some of that waste and keep it out of our landfills and help out our plant.
