Fun and risky play
I can recall many moments of the time I was a kid, playing some very creative games while at the same time I couldn’t realise the risks invlolved. There was definitely a great element of creativity involved as well as some attraction to anything forbidden or not conventional. The bigger the risk, the more the enjoyement we were getting out of our outdoor play.
Just to mention a few of the riskier ones, I can recall some kind of bike chasing all around the neighbourhood. We had to split into two teams, the first team had five minutes to cycle away and the second one had to find them within one hour. Locating someone wan’t enough as that person would have to be taken out of the game by actually being caught!. Chasing was absolute madness as we would overlook anyone who would be on our way such as pedestrians, vehicles, parked cars etc. Exporation wasn’t always without victims or injuries but minor ones.
The best one, however, was ‘exploration’. A part of that was about getting into abandoned buildings such as old houses, villas, or even commercial multi-storey premises and try to discover somethign bizare that would really strike our endless imagination. Getting into that huge old mansion was our biggest achievment and it took as some days in order to explore every single room and floor. There were moments we were actually thinking we where going to come across something big. Of course we had our own fearls and many times we were getting too paranoid about non existent security guys patroling the place.
Once, we broke into an abandoned warehouse that was owened by an aviation company which had gone bankrupt. The different chambers where not totally empty yet and we came across so many mysterious items. Most of them we couldn’t even identify them as we had never come across circular connectors, rectangular connectors or power connectors.
Although it may sound weird, if I had the chance to go back in time I would definitely try those games again and I would even recommend them to my kids.
